Difference between a gang and a hate group?

There is a news report about "gangs" cropping up in the military and it listed crips, bloods, and white supremacy affiliations. To me there is a difference between gangs and hate groups. One of the hate group members stated they would over throw the government. They target minorities and gays for persecution. That's not what crips and bloods and Lantino gangs are interested in. There is a different kind of danger and threat involved with gangs than with hate groups. What is your take on this situation.
