Help me choose between a Mercedes or a domestic car, (ford, pontiac, etc)?

I'm looking for a dependable practical car to purchase in cash, I normally try to stick with domestic brands because the parts are more readily available, but I've been offered an older Mercedes, not sure what year, but in great condition, and I'm just wondering, would the Mercedes normally be more reliable and perform better than say a pontiac or a chevy ? or is it the same performance of the domestic brands plus lots of "hype?' I was offered the Mercedes for $2400 cash and it's in great condition. Any feedback is welcome, any info about Mercedes or another good car, any advice is welcome! I'm listening! can't wait to see your responses!
